It starred Jessie Mueller, Drew Gehling and Joe Tippett equally Jenna, Jim and Earl, respectively. It made its Broadway debut at the Brooks Atkinson Theatre in April 2016. A U.S. national bout began on Oct twenty, 2017.

Brought to life by a groundbreaking all-female person creative team, this irresistible new hitting features original music and lyrics by 5-time Grammy® nominee Sara Bareilles ("Dauntless," "Love Vocal"), a book by acclaimed screenwriter Jessie Nelson ("I Am Sam") and management by Tony Accolade® winner Diane Paulus ("Pippin,' "Finding Neverland").

Jenna, an unhappy waitress and adept pie maker, is stuck in a small town and loveless marriage. She is also faced with an unexpected pregnancy that may end her dreams of opening up her own pie store. Desi Oakley will don an apron and bake across the country as Jenna in the national tour of "Waitress." Amid those joining her in the road product are Bryan Fenkart as Dr. Pommater and a trio of electric current Broadway cast members.

Oakley takes on the central office, originated on Broadway by Tony-winner Jessie Mueller and subsequently played by the show's creator Sara Bareilles and currently by Betsy Wolfe. Oakley previously appeared in the national bout of "Evita" every bit the alternate for the title role and on Broadway in "Les Misérables," "Annie," and "Wicked."

"I auditioned for 'Waitress' this by summer," said Oakley, during a phone interview final week from a tour stop in Baltimore. "I had seen the show before because it was so successful on Broadway. They were looking for a Jenna for the tour and I got an audition.

"Afterwards seven years in the business organisation hustling and pounding the pavement, this felt different than any other task opportunity I had. Information technology simply felt correct. I auditioned once and they were pretty serious virtually me. I got the office and nosotros started rehearsals in September. Nosotros're the original national tour company. We teched and opened in Cleveland."

Oakley commencement found her style to a phase when she was growing up in Wichita, Kansas. She made her principal debut as Dorothy in "The Magician of Oz" at Music Theatre Wichita.

"I studied musical theater at the University of Michigan," said Oakley. "I went directly to New York afterwards graduation and six months later made my debut in 'Wicked.' I was in the ensemble for 'Wicked' on Broadway and on the National Tour. Then, I did the National Tour of 'Evita.'

"When I start saw 'Waitress,' I thought information technology was spectacular. I hadn't seen anything similar to it on stage – the pop songs, the characters, the writing. It just seemed so existent to me. Information technology felt a huge impression on me,

"I call up it's a combination of Sara Bareilles' music – so piece of cake to mind to and fans really like information technology – and the existent characters. It's too the heart of the story. When people picket, they go introspective – the human heart, following your dreams, looking at who you are now and how your past influences your nowadays. It's a story people need to hear – and get changed by."

Oakley also constitute information technology piece of cake to bail with Jenna.

"I honey my grapheme," said Oakley. "She'due south complicated in all the all-time means. She'southward kind and loving – and she's messy. She has a lot of dreams, but they've been suppressed because of her circumstance. She's a perfect instance of the girl next door who overcomes obstacles and yet chases love.

"I'm able to requite colors to Jenna considering I'm real. I'm not a robot. The well-nigh challenging part of playing Jenna is that it'southward a big function. I'm on stage the whole fourth dimension – except for iv minutes.

And, similar Jenna, Oakley loves pie.

"My favorite pie is ruby pie," said Oakley, whose gustation parallels that of Amanuensis Cooper from "Twin Peaks."

"Domino" is featured on ZZ'southward latest album, "The Storm," which debuted #1 on Billboard's Dejection chart and marks the 2nd fourth dimension the pair accept collaborated. Fitz co-wrote and produced the track "Save My Life" on Ward'due south critically-acclaimed debut album "Til The Casket Drops."

On Jan 30th, Ward returned to the headline spot when The Storm Tour kicked off in Common salt Lake Urban center with openers Baton Raffoul and Blackness Pistol Fire. With several U.S. headline tours, countless sold-out shows and buzzworthy festival performances already under her belt, Ward is a respected headliner.

Ward, who now lives in Los Angeles, was built-in in nearby Abington in Montgomery County. Surprisingly, Abington has produced a number of artists who take been successful in prove business organization including TV host Bob Saget, actors Joey Lawrence, Matthew Fox and Stephen Lynch, singer Alecia Moore (better known equally Pink) and musician Steve Berlin of Los Lobos.

Just, Ward just lived in Abington every bit a immature child and her family relocated to the Pacific Northwest.

"I was born in Abington and then grew up in Bucks Canton — in Churchville," said Ward, during a recent telephone interview from a bout finish in Omaha, Nebraska.

On Feb 13, Ward will return to the Philly area when she brings "The Tempest Tour" to the Theatre of the Living Arts (334 Due south Street, Philadelphia, 215-222-1011,http://world wide web.lnphilly.com).

"It's always special for me to play a bear witness in Philadelphia," said Ward. "I definitely feel an attachment to Philly. I withal have friends from elementary school who come out to hear me play when I come up there.

"My mom went to Germantown High and my dad went to Hatboro-Horsham High. My mom grew up equally a city girl and she wanted to get out in the open air. So, our family moved to Oregon — to Roseburg, Oregon. It was a pocket-size boondocks and nosotros lived a half-hour outside boondocks on a 23-acre subcontract lot."

It was there that Ward got interested in music.

"My dad was in a blues band," said Ward. "When I first started listening to the blues, the sincerity of the artists resonated in me. Something in their voices fabricated me honey the blues.

"I was in my first blues band when I was 12 or xiii. I'd come out with my Fedora on and sing Albert Male monarch'south 'Equally the Years Become Passing By.' I was also listening to hip-hop — Nas, Jay-Z — and the stories they were telling.

"I went to a community college. I played hip-hop shows when I was at that place. I was also singing songs with my dad's blues ring. He taught me how to play harmonica. But, there was no opportunity for music where I was living and so I had to move to Fifty.A."

One time in Southern California, Ward began making her own music — starting with the "Eleven Roses" mixtape in February 2012 and the "Criminal" EP in May 2012. Her debut total-length anthology "Til The Casket Drops" was released in October 2012. Nearly five years after, she released "The Tempest" in June 2017.

"I actually made an entire second album – and then I scrapped it," said Ward. "I felt like I didn't become deep plenty into my influence of hip hop and dejection. Those tracks just went off into fourth dimension somewhere. Information technology was only a process. Every artist has a different procedure.

"I wrote a whole new batch of songs that were good stories of my life. I tried to apply the influence of blues and hip hop. The song 'Cannonball' was more blues. 'Allow It Burn down' is more a trap shell with slide dejection guitar. I think I went further into the blues than I did on my start anthology. Blues and hip hop are similar in a lot of ways. My mind doesn't think of genres when I'm writing. It's more than afterwards. I similar that my music doesn't fit in a genre.

"In my experience being a singer and a author, I connect the most when I'1000 existence really honest nigh what I'm going through. Writing a song is cathartic. You lot have this affair where your mind makes more out of less. I can write a whole anthology about one relationship. Everybody applies these stories to their lives

"I'm e'er trying to write incredible songs. I don't limit myself to how I write. It could exist keyboards, guitar or tracks. If you feel the emotion — pitiful, angry, sexy — it'southward good equally long as y'all get emotion from the song."
